As we hit our 40’s perimenopause arrives & plays havoc with our bodies including our skin, hair & even our eyelashes.  They become thinner, lighter, straighter, brittle, sparser; more fragile.  The skin around our eyes gets thinner & more sensitive.  Often, the mascara we reached for & loved in our 20’s just isn’t giving us the lash results it once did.

Heavy voluminsing mascaras can:
- irritate mature eyes
- cause clumpy lashes
- smudge
- be difficult to remove, causing damage to existing lashes
- drag down the eyes
Often it is not the product that is failing us; along with everything else our lashes are under the influence of decreasing oestrogen.
Here’s the GOOD NEWS a few strategic steps can make a BIG difference.  All you have to do is follow the tips below to make the most of your lashes.
Pro Lash Tips
Toss out your old mascara if it is more than 6 months old.
You want to avoid the possibility of eye infections.
Each time you open the tube the formula is exposed to air. Â The more exposure the drier the formulation becomes, leading to clumpy mascara, result clumped lashes & smudging. A smudged eye has the appearance of droopiness; making us look older than our years-the LAST thing we want-RIGHT?
Prep Your Lashes
Once you’ve completed your eye makeup, it’s a good idea to comb through your lashes with a clean spoolie.  Even the best shadows create some fallout.  So, let’s get rid of any dust.
Next-Curl your lashes. This always opens up the eyes & gives your face an instant lift.  I use a heated eyelash curler (purchased on Amazon) You can also use the original clamp style.  If you want a beautiful, open youthful eye, don’t skip this step.

Choose a Wand that Defines & Separates with the Right Formula
When our lashes become fine, thin & wispy, we need to choose a mascara with a traditional spoolie wand, along with a light weight or tubing formula. Â The spoolie wand will help separate & define the lashes.
Tubing formulas coat individual lashes on every side, resulting in a thicker looking lash. Â Added bonus-these tubes usually slide off gently with water & a cotton pad.
Skip waterproof formulas. Â They require more effort to remove, rubbing can compromise fragile lashes, leading to lash fallout & stress the delicate skin around the eyes.

Correct Application
Place the horizontal edge of your wand at the base of your lashes, gently wiggle the brush side to side & pull through to the ends. Do this until you feel comfortable with the look you want to achieve. For extra separation & definition, use a clean spoolie to brush through & remove any excess product.

Colour Choice
Softer colours of mascara are usually more flattering on mature eyes.
Think smoky charcoals, deep aubergine, rich browns & emerald tones, applied intentionally, these colours truly brighten & allow your eyes to pop.
A trick I often use on my more mature clients is pairing black mascara on the top lashes with a cool brown painted on the lower lashes. Â The subtle contrast created opens the eyes stunningly. Â The illusion is a larger, brighter eye.
