The secret? Knowing the undertone of your complexion.  Get this right & choosing a lip colour that brightens & flatters becomes effortless.

The easiest way to determine your undertone is to note the colour of the veins on the back of your wrist.

Skin tone is a different concept again.  You can be very fair & still have a warm undertone.  You can be very dark & still have a cool undertone. Your skin tone may change with the seasons — Your undertone stays the same.

Cool Undertones

You have a COOL undertone if your skin has a pink/red/blueish hue. Do you burn easily in the sun without sunscreen, does silver toned jewelry flatter you? More than likely you’re a COOL undertone.

Lipstick Colours for Cool Undertones

Opt for shades which lean towards a blue/purple/mauve hues.  When looking for a red choose something that pops when placed next to your skin.  Look for a mirror & place the colour in front of your lips.  Remember, your lip colour is a lot darker than the back of your hand.

REDS: Magenta, Cherry, Plum

PINKS: Mauve, Berry

NUDES: Soft Rosey Pink

Warm Undertones

You’re likely to be a WARM if you have a golden or olive tone to your skin, if the veins on the back of your wrist look more greenish than blue, you tend to tan easily & gold jewelry looks great on you.

Lipstick Colours for Warm Undertones

Those with warm undertones to their skin look fabulous in orange/brown hued lipstick shades.

REDS: Terracotta, Strawberry

PINKS: Corals, Deep Rose

NUDES: Peachy, Pale Sienna

Neutral Undertones

If you have a mixture of blue/green hue to the veins on the back of your wrist, you can rock gold or silver jewellery, you’re more than likely a NEUTRAL undertone, you have warm & pink in your complexion.

The world is your oyster when it comes to lip colour.  

Lipstick Colours for Neutral Undertones

Those with neutral undertones can get away with almost any colour.  Skin tone will determine what suits best.

FAIR: Pinks

MEDIUM: Mauves, Corals

DARK: Berries

But you know what? At the end of the day, if you feel great in your plum/red lipstick, you have a warm undertone and it gives you confidence & you rock it, then that’s the shade for you.

Let’s face it, if you don’t like a look you’ve popped on, it’s simple wash it off. Makeup should lift you up, create your mood for the day, be fun.
